Mayo Clinic High Acuity Low Occurrence (HALO) Conference: Preparation for High-Stakes Emergencies
This course will be offered Live (in-person) only

Course Directors: Tyler F. Vadeboncoeur, M.D. and Leslie V. Simon, D.O.
February 17 - 20, 2027 - Mayo Clinic Simulation Lab and Hilton Jacksonville at Mayo Clinic - Jacksonville, Florida
In emergency medicine we encounter high acuity low occurrence (HALO) events that require ongoing preparation and training that is beyond what is provided by routine clinical practice. Through didactics, skills stations, high-fidelity simulation and interactive discussions, Mayo Clinic HALO Conference: Preparation for High-Stakes Emergencies is the ideal venue to ready yourself for those rare and scary cases that might come through your department doors.
Target Audience
The primary audience is emergency physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners; both trainees and those established in emergency medicine practice. Additional participants might include urgent care providers and hospitalists.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate appropriate clinical decision-making and procedural skills required to manage HALO scenarios, such as emergency obstetric deliveries, pediatric resuscitation, or airway emergencies.
- Perform high-stakes, time-sensitive procedures such as Minnesota tube insertion, transvenous pacemaker placement, and emergency thoracotomy in simulated or supervised clinical environments.
- Describe the relationship between clinical preparedness, procedural competence, and provider well-being in high-stress emergency scenarios.
- Demonstrate clear, concise, and direct communication using structured tools (e.g., SBAR, closed-loop communication) during high-stakes emergency scenarios.
Attendance at any Mayo Clinic course does not indicate or guarantee competence or proficiency in the skills, knowledge or performance of any care or procedure(s) which may be discussed or taught in this course.
