“Enhancing Healthcare Value with Patient Reported Outcomes: Is Measurement Enough?”

Abstract:

Effective monitoring of patient reported outcomes (PROs) has been recognized as essential to the advancement of medicine.  As a result, governmental agencies and commercial payers alike are beginning to insist that this information be available on an almost real-time basis.  Promising reports suggest PROs’ capacity to improve care alignment with patients’ needs and priorities, and to identify and quantify factors that influence efficiencies in care delivery.  These findings have spurred compelling PRO-based strategies to reduce utilization while enhancing clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.    However, we lack an evidence base to guide stakeholder groups in the translation of PROs to high value and patient-centric care.  A taxonomy is needed to clarify the steps and conditions required for PROs to positively impact care delivery and to pragmatically direct research aimed at optimizing PRO data collection, analysis, and use in clinical encounters—both for the patients reporting it and for the clinicians receiving it.  The lecture will propose a rudimentary framework for the clinical integration of function-related PROs with emphasis on opportunities to address critical knowledge gaps.
