Hospital Medicine is the fastest growing medical specialty and requires a diverse skill set. Hospital-based health care providers must be able to diagnose and manage a wide variety of clinical conditions, coordinate transitions of care, provide perioperative management to surgical patients and contribute to quality improvement and hospital administration. 

This program has been specifically designed to ensure that participants augment their skill set to meet these many challenges in an effort to enhance the delivery of health care and provide better patient outcomes. Using an interactive, case-based format, key highlights from most major areas of hospital medicine will be presented.

Target Audience

This program is designed for inpatient care providers including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Hospitalists are defined as those who spend most of their professional practice caring for hospitalized patients. Internal Medicine and Family Practice, among others, are specialties that have practitioners who care for hospitalized patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Define sepsis according to most recent clinical guidelines.
  • Apply a high-value, cost-conscious approach when evaluating syncope in the hospital.
  • Select which patients with acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding require colonoscopy in the hospital.
  • List indications for subspecialty consultation in the management of atrial fibrillation.
  • Develop an approach to the evaluation of seizure in the hospital.
  • Select appropriate management strategies for preventing pressure ulcers.
  • Develop a differential diagnosis for non-infectious causes of pneumonia.
  • Evaluate a glomerular disease in a hospitalized patient.
  • Identify strategies to reduce burnout.
