Palliative Medicine in Clinical Practice 2020 provides the practicing primary care provider and specialty provider with clear, concise, and relevant presentations aimed at preparing all clinicians to successfully care for patients with serious illness and all forms of multimodal pain management needs. The Palliative Medicine portion is a newer offering after a successful and highly desired preconference to Pain Medicine. Over the last three years, this offering has provided highly reviewed and highly sought after content aimed at equipping clinicians with the skills needed to provide valued care for patients with serious, life-limiting illness from diagnosis to hospice, symptom management to advance care planning.

This multidisciplinary CME course provides synergistic content, relevant to primary care providers and specialty practitioners who care for patients with a serious illness and/or those patients experience pain. The course provides concise reviews, broader themed panels, breakout sessions and expert demonstrations across a range or relevant topics, including: spine care review, pharmacologic management with opioid and non-opioid strategies, updates on common chronic pain conditions, critical conversation skills, review of symptom management, quality of life interventions, CBT options, cancer considerations, delirium management, side-effect mitigation strategies.

Target Audience

This medical CME course is targeted towards non-pain & non-palliative specialists of all backgrounds, including general internal medicine, emergency medicine, neurology, family medicine, psychiatrists, psychiatrists, hospitalists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other medical providers (both physician and non-physician). Particular attention will focus on content and speakers relevant to advance practice providers given that they continue to be a growth attendee population for this course.

Learning Objectives

  • Formulate a strategy for communicating with patients and families with a serious illness about overall care goals.
  • Develop a framework for assessing patient prognosis and how to apply to patients with medical frailty.
  • Develop an approach for managing pain in patients with a terminal illness including alternate routes of administration.
