The course focuses on a review of current clinical practice related to recognizing seizures and epilepsy in conjunction with adjunctive EEG testing and includes details about how technology can lead to incorrect diagnosis and treatment. An interactive and didactic format includes multimedia presentations and allows audience participation. The course has opportunities for participants to ask questions on the cases discussed or to present their own cases to the faculty panel. This course will also feature an American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) MOC Self-Assessment activity.

Call for Abstracts
Abstract Eligibility: Original abstracts that either have or have not been presented at other meetings will be considered for the conference. Abstracts based upon published papers based on stroke will also be considered. Research Competition: Outstanding abstracts will be selected for electronic poster presentation.

Research Competition: Outstanding abstracts will be selected by our course directors for an electronic poster presentations at the course.

Number of Entries: A participant may be the primary author on no more than two abstracts; however, he or she may be a contributing author on any number of abstracts.

Submission Deadline: Abstract submission deadline is Friday, September 29, 2023.

Notification of Results: All primary authors will be notified no later than Monday, October 2, 2023, if their submission has been selected for the poster session. Details regarding poster set-up will follow. Early submissions may be accepted and notified prior to the above date. 

 

Target Audience

The program is intended for neurologists, physicians in internal medicine, family practice and general practice, pediatricians, physician assistants, nurses and allied health professionals involved in the care of patients with seizures and epilepsy.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss common errors when treating children and young adults with recurrent spells
  • Identify when to use different techniques in recording and monitoring patients with seizures
  • Recognize the impact of video-EEG monitoring in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with recurrent seizures and attacks that are resistant to medication
  • Compare treatment strategies for refractory seizure disorders
  • Discuss medical and surgical approaches to managing patients with drug-resistant seizures
  • Recognize common normal variations in EEG including the benign variants that may be misleading
  • Describe the challenges associated with the diagnosis and management of seizures in patients with and without epilepsy
  • Discuss the impact of misdiagnoses in the treatment of epilepsy
