Awake Spine Pre-Conference Workshop: November 14, 2024
General Session: November 15-16, 2024

This course is designed to enhance physician and advance practice provider comfort in the management of patients with diverse spinal disorders and conditions. This two-day course focuses on discussions concerning the management of spinal disorders, as well as technological advancements, controversial spine topics, complications and socioeconomic issues. The course provides a mixture of didactic, case-based and evidence-based guideline review, along with an opportunity for panel discussion.

Awake Spine Pre-Conference Workshop (Nov 14)
Awake spine surgery is a new and developing field of minimally invasive spine surgery. While spine surgery is typically performed with general anesthesia, awake spine is performed with regional anesthesia allowing faster recovery, reduced pain, reduced overall system effect on the patient. The goal of this workshop is to teach both the techniques needed for and the benefits of performing awake spine surgery as well as how to develop and implement an awake spine program. Please note that there is an additional cost associated with this workshop.

Physicians, PhD, DOs, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Residents, Fellows, Students, and Allied Health Staff

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

General Session:
1. Review the best medical practices for different spinal conditions and pathologies
2. Discuss new endoscopic surgical techniques
3. Identify overlooked diagnoses in the treatment of chronic back pain
4. Identify various complications in spine surgery

Pre-Conference Workshop
1. Identify the benefits of awake spine surgery
2. Review the techniques enabling awake spine surgery
3. Detect the different types of regional blocks to perform awake spine surgery
4. Identify steps to develop an awake spine surgery program
5. Review patient eligibility in selection criteria
