This two-day, highly interactive course focuses on the key concepts and skills related to health system science which is the study of systems, processes, and leadership to optimize healthcare delivery and person-centered care. Innovative application of these concepts is explored in small inter-professional groups with the aim of identifying practical and individualized ways to integrate them into clinical practice and education. The course includes plenary presentations combined with extensive small group workshops focused on the six domains of knowledge in health system science.

 Participation in the 2023 Mayo Clinic Health Systems Science, Essentials for the Clinical Educator contributes toward 6 hours of educational skill development hours (criteria 1) for membership within the Mayo Clinic Academy of Educational Excellence.

 

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and nurses who have faculty and teaching responsibilities in allied health, undergraduate, graduate, or post-doctoral educational programs.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify key concepts and skills embedded in health system science curriculum.
  • Describe ways that science of healthcare principles and skills can be integrated into clinical care and trainee education.
  • Discuss the importance of health system science and its clinical applicability.
  • Identify team-based care actions that promote system science thinking.
