Course Description

Videotaped based workshop in suicide assessment and treatment.  The goal is to understand the experiences of the suicidal patient and the responses of the therapist to that patient's narrative.  Patient and therapist will then co-construct an appropriate treatment plan.

Course Highlights
Aeschi 8: Bearing the Struggle: Exploring the Challenges Facing Clinicians Working with Suicidal Patients will be the theme of a Mayo Clinic-sponsored three day conference in Vail, Colorado, June 11-June 13, 2015. Organized around highly interactive lectures, seminars, and workshops, a limited number of participants will have the privilege of learning from some  of the world’s leading suicide experts about the clinical management of suicidal patients, including Drs. David Jobes of Catholic University of America, Konrad Michel of the University of Bern, Marjan Holloway of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, J. Michael Bostwick of Mayo Clinic, Christine Moutier of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, M. David Rudd of the University of Memphis, Dr. Alex Sabo of Berkshire Medical Center, and others . Keynote speakers will include Dr. Matthew Nock of Harvard University and Joan Wickersham, author of “The Suicide Index”. 

Registration Rates

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

1. Develop enhanced skills for engaging and assessing suicidal patients in a collaborative working relationship between patient and clinician.
2. Recognize the experience of the clinician in working with suicidal patients and how that can impact the care of the patient.
3. Define the importance of clinician and patient developing a narrative of the patient’s suicidality as the first stage in formulating a treatment plan.
