Radiation Oncology Nursing Curriculum

This comprehensive curriculum provides nurses with essential knowledge on the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors of cancers across various disease sites, including head and neck, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, breast, central nervous system, lung, lymphoma, gynecologic, pediatric, and sarcoma cancers. The content emphasizes the presenting symptoms, diagnostic workup, and treatment modalities for each cancer type, with a particular focus on radiation therapy. Nurses will also gain expertise in recognizing and managing the side effects of radiation therapy.

Target Audience

This nursing course is designed for nurses caring for patients in active radiation therapy or have received radiation therapy as part of their cancer treatment.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Define treatment modalities, presenting symptoms, diagnostic tools, and therapeutic options for the disease sites covered
  • Describe the nursing assessment, and management strategies for the side effects of radiation therapy for the disease sites covered
  • Explain the cancer prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for disease sites covered
  • Explain the principles of radiobiology, the types of radiation used in cancer treatment, and the processes involved in radiation therapy, including treatment planning, body immobilization techniques, and specialized modalities
