Advanced Surgical Techniques for the Spastic Upper Limb 2027
This course offers Live (in-person) attendance only
Course Director: Peter C. Rhee, D.O., M.S.
April 9 - April 10, 2027 - Mayo Clinic Rochester - Stabile 9 - Rochester, MN
This 1.5-day advanced cadaveric surgical skills course is designed for surgeons seeking to expand beyond the foundational techniques of upper limb spasticity surgery. Through a focused blend of expert didactic instruction and intensive hands-on cadaver laboratory training, participants will explore contemporary and emerging reconstructive strategies for complex spastic upper limb deformities, with particular emphasis on advanced tendon transfers, nerve transfers, and joint-stabilizing procedures.
The course will highlight thoughtful patient and procedure selection, technical execution, and integration of complementary reconstructive techniques, providing participants with practical exposure to cutting-edge approaches intended to restore balance, improve positioning, and optimize upper-extremity function. It is expected that participants will have a thorough understanding of basic principles in the surgical management of the spastic upper limb.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Assess patients with upper-extremity spasticity and identify appropriate surgical treatment options.
- Compare nerve-based and muscle-tendon surgical techniques for management of spastic deformities.
- Demonstrate operative approaches and cadaveric techniques for treatment of spasticity affecting the shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand, and thumb.
- Incorporate advanced reconstructive procedures, including tendon transfers and nerve transfers, into patient-specific surgical treatment plans.
- Apply acquired surgical knowledge and skills to improve upper-extremity function and patient outcomes.
Attendance at any Mayo Clinic course does not indicate or guarantee competence or proficiency in the skills, knowledge or performance of any care or procedure(s) which may be discussed or taught in this course.
