COVID-19: Countering an "Infodemic" of Misinformation – For CME Credit - Online


The unknown nature of the COVID-19 virus, use of social media and politicization has resulted in physical and mental suffering, including death from bogus treatments. This course focuses on how misinformation and disinformation can impact medical professionals as well as patients with deeply held beliefs. Disinformation and misinformation prevalence, impact and projected trends are discussed, as well as strategies for responding to misinformation during the medical encounter.  

Target Audience

This online course is designed for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, allied health professionals, and resident/fellows who need to understand the impact of misinformation and disinformation on healthcare decision making and patients’ beliefs. Misinformation and disinformation can create distrust, impede medical discovery, and undermine the patient-provider relationship.  

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the differences between misinformation and disinformation
  • Describe the projected impact of COVID-19 misinformation on healthcare delivery
  • Identify two communication strategies for responding to patient misconceptions and misinformation

Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Live Activities:
Request for cancellations must be submitted in writing to cme@mayo.edu. When cancelling a registration for a course 14 days or more before the course start date, a full refund (minus a $75 administrative fee) will be issued in the same form of payment the registration was received. No refunds are granted less than 14 days before the course start date.

Online/Enduring Material Activities:
Customers may cancel their participation from an online activity if no credit has been claimed and a written request is made within 30 days of purchase. A full refund minus a maximum $75.00 administrative fee will be provided. Administrative fees might be lower on activities that were initially $150 or less.
