COVID19: Countering an "Infodemic" of Misinformation Online CME Course
Available until October 28, 2023 - Online CME Course
The unknown nature of the COVID-19 virus, use of social media and politicization has resulted in physical and mental suffering, including death from bogus treatments. This course focuses on how misinformation and disinformation can impact medical professionals as well as patients with deeply held beliefs. Disinformation and misinformation prevalence, impact and projected trends are discussed, as well as strategies for responding to misinformation during the medical encounter.
This online course is designed for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, allied health professionals, and resident/fellows who need to understand the impact of misinformation and disinformation on healthcare decision making and patients’ beliefs. Misinformation and disinformation can create distrust, impede medical discovery, and undermine the patient-provider relationship.
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the differences between misinformation and disinformation
- Describe the projected impact of COVID-19 misinformation on healthcare delivery
- Identify two communication strategies for responding to patient misconceptions and misinformation
