This year, more than any other will be extremely important for our patients to receive the influenza vaccine. Influenza is similar to COVID-19 in that they are both respiratory viruses. However, at this time, we do have a vaccine for influenza. In previous years, less than half of the population has received the vaccine for influenza. Our guest for this podcast is Dr. Robert Jacobson, a pediatrician and vaccine specialist at the Mayo Clinic. We discuss the reasons it’s so important for our patients to receive the influenza vaccine for 2020/2021 and whether we experience lower immunity in the Spring if we receive the influenza vaccine too early in the previous year. We also discuss some of the common reasons patients give us for not wanting the vaccine and whether there is any truth to their concerns. Finally, we review proven techniques we can use to increase the rates our patients receive the influenza vaccine.
