Larynx Dissection Course

Phoenix, AZ US
March 30, 2023

Course Directors: Defne Abur, Ph.D., David G. Lott, M.D., Michael J. McPhail, Ph.D., Juergen Neubauer, Ph.D., and Stephanie R.C. Zacharias, Ph.D., CCC-SLP.

March 30, 2023 - 9:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

This workshop provides an opportunity for participants to dissect a cadaver larynx and appreciate the relationship of the larynx to the pharynx, nerves, vessels, etc. This allows participants to get a big-picture view of how the larynx interacts with the other anatomy and functions. Participants also will perform some of the more common laryngeal surgeries patients experience:  thyroplasty, cricopharyngeal myotomy, and laryngectomy. Once the larynx is removed, participants will better explore both the intrinsic and external muscles, and dissect the vocal folds. Participants will then examine the dissected vocal folds under an operating microscope to better appreciate the complex microarchitecture and try their hands at microscopic phonosurgery. If you prefer not to perform the dissection yourself, you will be assigned to a team so that you may get the experience without having to perform the dissection.

Target Audience

This multidisciplinary conference is designed for scientists, clinicians, and students from around the world in various disciplines including engineering, biology, physics, otolaryngology and speech pathology.
