Mayo Clinic's Updates in Palliative Care is a multidisciplinary CME course designed to build and enhance your palliative care knowledge. Experts from Mayo Clinic provide clinically relevant pearls for palliative care providers and clinicians from primary care, hematology/oncology, hospital medicine, critical care, pediatrics, and related specialties. If you care for patients with serious illness and are looking to broaden your skills beyond the basics, this is the course for you.
General Session: April 29-May 1, 2027

Target Audience
Targeted clinician specialties (MD, NP, PA-C) including clinicians from general internal medicine, family medicine, hospital medicine, oncology, hospice and palliative care, critical care, geriatrics, nephrology and cardiology.
Learning Objectives

- Appreciate demographic, psychosocial, and racial factors that are associated with decreased access to effective hospice and palliative care and recognize ways to promote a collaborative model of care that provides all patients with optimal serious illness care.
- Optimize ways to promote goal-concordant care and appreciate the suffering associated with insufficient goal-concordant care at end of life.
- Identify effective strategies to be utilized in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team to mitigate psychosocial suffering and facilitate adaptive coping in patients with serious life-limiting illness.
- Review new pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management options available to palliate common symptoms associated with serious life-limiting illness.
- Outline protocols for transitioning patients from high-dose full opioid agonists to buprenorphine
- Appreciate the role of buprenorphine in managing OUD within palliative care
- Describe the use of IV buprenorphine in the inpatient setting
- Apply tips and tricks for successful buprenorphine use in the palliative care setting (with naloxone vs without, taste issues, patient counselling, etc.)
- Describe the pharmacology of buprenorphine
- List buprenorphine products that are FDA-approved for pain vs. addiction
- Appreciate the improved safety profile of buprenorphine over full opioid agonists
- Identify appropriate patients for buprenorphine
- Prescribe buprenorphine for patients who are opioid naive or on a relatively low dose of short-acting opioids.
- Apply tips and tricks for successful buprenorphine use in the palliative care setting (rash from adhesive, teaching specific to patch vs films, etc).
