COURSE DESCRIPTION

Over the past few years, management of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has been revolutionized by targeted oral agents, including Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors, such as ibrutinib and acalabrutinib, and the BCL-2 inhibitor venetoclax. These therapies have unique toxicity profiles, and they have significantly improved patient outcomes and survival, even in high-risk disease. In this presentation, I will review the diagnosis and management of CLL, discuss the role of targeted therapies as first line options, and provide an overview of important clinical considerations and adverse effects associated with the use of these targeted therapeutic agents.

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review chronic lymphocytic leukemia diagnosis and historical treatment options
  2. Describe the pharmacology of Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors and venetoclax
  3. Discuss the use of targeted agents as first line therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia
