Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the integrated pulmonary, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular physiologic responses to exercise that underpin normal and abnormal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) results
- Differentiate normal from pathologic responses on CPET, pulmonary function testing (PFT), impulse oscillometry (IOS), and respiratory muscle assessment across common cardiopulmonary disease states
- Apply best practices for conducting, quality-controlling, and interpreting CPET, PFT, and IOS to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce unnecessary downstream testing
- Identify clinical scenarios in which noninvasive cardiopulmonary testing is insufficient and determine when invasive CPET or advanced testing strategies are indicated
- Integrate cardiopulmonary testing results into individualized exercise prescription and rehabilitation planning to optimize functional outcomes and patient-centered care
