Target Audience

Target audience includes physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners in the specialties of pulmonology, cardiology, internal medicine, and family medicine.
Respiratory therapists and exercise physiologists may also benefit from this course.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the integrated pulmonary, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular physiologic responses to exercise that underpin normal and abnormal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) results
  • Differentiate normal from pathologic responses on CPET, pulmonary function testing (PFT), impulse oscillometry (IOS), and respiratory muscle assessment across common cardiopulmonary disease states
  • Apply best practices for conducting, quality-controlling, and interpreting CPET, PFT, and IOS to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce unnecessary downstream testing
  • Identify clinical scenarios in which noninvasive cardiopulmonary testing is insufficient and determine when invasive CPET or advanced testing strategies are indicated
  • Integrate cardiopulmonary testing results into individualized exercise prescription and rehabilitation planning to optimize functional outcomes and patient-centered care

Attendance at any Mayo Clinic course does not indicate or guarantee competence or proficiency in the skills, knowledge or performance of any care or procedure(s) which may be discussed or taught in this course.
