This course is designed as a review of techniques and topics pertaining to clinical neurophysiology. It includes basic physiology, pathophysiology, electroencephalography, evoked potentials, electromyography, movement disorders and intraoperative monitoring. There is a focus on clinical correlation of various neurophysiological tests used for the evaluation of patients with epilepsy, sleep disorders, movement disorders, peripheral nerve disorders, and neuromuscular disorders. Presenters include Mayo Clinic staff members and faculty of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine from the Departments of Neurology in Jacksonville, FL., Rochester, MN., and Scottsdale, AZ.

Target Audience

This course is designed for practitioners (MD, DO, NP, PA, RN) interested in the clinical practice of neurophysiology, including both basic and advanced theory and practice. Those practitioners looking for a comprehensive review of the CNP or wishing to advance their knowledge base in these areas are encouraged to attend. Neurophysiology technicians, who are expected to perform these procedures and have some understanding of the interpretation are also encouraged to attend. There will be an option to purchase the ABPN MOC exam offered upon completion of the course.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Interpret normal background activity and variations in amplitude, frequency, and morphology across different brain regions.
  • Assess the potential implications of artifacts on diagnostic accuracy and treatment decisions for neurological and epileptic conditions.
  • Develop effective communication skills to explain the classification, prognosis, and treatment options to individuals with epilepsy and their support networks.
  • Describe the varying presentations of movement disorders and how movement neurophysiology can aid in providing diagnosis.
  • Identify the EMG findings in radiculopathy and review clinical presentation.
  • Apply electrodes to obtain meaningful and reliable EMG recordings from less frequently studied muscles.
  • Review clinical situations where uncommon motor and sensory nerve conduction studies can aid in diagnostic specificity.
  • Identify how to neurophysiologically confirm neuromuscular transmission disorders and different clinical presentations.
  • Interpret neuromuscular ultrasound images to identify normal anatomical structures, such as peripheral nerves, muscle bellies, tendons, and blood vessels.
  • Develop logical approach to the use of standard clinical electrophysiological techniques in the evaluation of common and uncommon neuromuscular disorders.
  • Identify patterns, correlations, and subtleties that may guide the electrodiagnostic process.
