DESCRIPTION
The conferences include monthly journal clubs, which consist of critical review of recent literature by faculty or learners undergoing a rotation in PM&R (residents, fellows, medical students). The topic of the article chosen must be pertinent to physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), and example of these topics include neurological rehabilitation, cancer rehabilitation, musculoskeletal medicine, sports medicine, and regenerative medicine. They also include monthly clinical conferences, which involves either a faculty or a learner presenting either a patient case presentation followed by more detailed discussion of a topic in rehabilitation, or a presentation in a chosen topic of rehabilitation. Target audiences include physicians and rotating learners (medical students, residents, and fellows).

TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience is PM&R Department faculty (consulting staff) and therapy staff (PT, OT, Speech Therapy); rotating learners including Mayo Clinic medical students, PM&R residents, MCA Pain Medicine Fellows, MCA TY residents, and visiting medical students. Thus, physicians at all levels are represented. Allied health staff such PT and OT are welcome to attend when the topic is relevant to their clinical practice.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Propose treatment recommendations based on new literature in patients presenting with various musculoskeletal symptoms.
  • Propose treatment recommendations based on new literature in patients presenting with various neurological conditions (stroke, brain injury, spasticity, spinal cord injury) in need of rehabilitation.
  • Develop skillset in critical analysis of new literature pertinent to the scope of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
