The Impact of Racial and Ethnic Disparities on Depression Care for Youth

Speaker #1: Vanessa D'Souza, M.D.

Introduction
Vanessa D’Souza, MD, is a second-year fellow in the child and adolescent psychiatry program at Mayo Clinic -Rochester.  She earned an honors bachelor’s degree in biochemistry with a specialization in biomedical sciences at McMaster University, where she also conducted research in platelet immunology. She conducted further research in platelet immunology through the Canadian Blood Services Summer Internship Award. She attended medical school at St. George’s University during which she completed the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program which included clinical experience in the United Kingdom and Kenya.  She then finished her adult psychiatry residency at Westchester Medical Center, where she was the chief resident of the outpatient department, before starting her fellowship training in child and adolescent psychiatry at Mayo Clinic.  She received the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Systems of Care Special Program Clinical Project Award in 2022. Her interests include consult and liaison psychiatry and integrated behavioral health. Vanessa plans to practice in Canada after graduating from fellowship.

  • Review current racial and ethnic disparities in depression care for children and adolescents.
  • Identify strategies to overcome barriers and provide responsive care that eliminates these disparities in depression care.

 

Considerations Related to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Adults with ADHD

Speaker #2: Alisson Lass, Ph.D.

Introduction
Alisson Lass is a Clinical Health Psychology Fellow here at Mayo Clinic with a concentration in Integrated Behavioral Health. She completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Mississippi State University and her pre-doctoral internship at the Ann Arbor VA. Her clinical and research interests involve different theoretical models of psychopathology. She is particularly interested in the etiology and maintenance of depressive symptoms—including psychological symptoms and conditions that overlap and co-occur with depressive symptoms.               

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review different theoretical models of psychopathology.
  • Explore how causal relationships among symptoms may help explain high rates of comorbidity.
  • Consider the importance of the identification and diagnosis of ADHD based on the lived experiences of Mayo Clinic patients.
