Introduction

Dr. Stefanie Cavalcanti, a distinguished professional in the field of psychiatry. Stefanie began her medical journey at Faculdade de Ciencias Medicas de Santos (FCMS) in Santos, São Paulo, where she earned her medical degree. Following this, she completed her residency at UTHealth Houston, later assuming the role of chief resident. Stefanie's professional trajectory has been marked by a genuine curiosity, particularly in the realms of novel treatments for mood disorders, neuromodulation, and evidence-based mental health practices. This passion for advancing mental health care led her to pursue a Mood Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, where she is currently immersed in research and clinical practice.

Lithium Use During Lactation

Megan Kummerlowe, DO

Introduction

Dr. Kummerlowe is a fourth-year resident in the adult psychiatry program and current outpatient chief resident. She earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry at Washington College in Maryland, followed by spending three years at Johns Hopkins working in the field of oncology research. She attended medical school at Campbell University in North Carolina, graduating magna cum laude. She has a passion for perinatal psychiatry and plans to work as an outpatient psychiatrist in Minneapolis after
graduation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the recent literatures findings on lithium use during lactation.
  • Utilize the latest data to engage in risk versus benefit discussions and provide recommendations to patients who want to breastfeed.
