Parental Leave- An Opportunity for Evidence Based Medicine

Michelle Linke Shafa, MD,MEd

Introduction

Michelle Linke Shafa, MD, MEd is a second-year fellow of child and adolescent psychiatry at Mayo Clinic - Rochester. She graduated with honors from University of Missouri - Columbia with bachelors' degrees in English Language Arts and Psychology. She holds a Master of Education degree from Lehman College, which was completed during her years of AmeriCorps service with Teach for America in the South Bronx. During her teaching career, she helped start a NYC public high school for English Language Learners and earned tenure through the New York Department of Education. During that time, she also obtained her EMT license and volunteered in the Central Park EMS Unit before deciding she wished to return to school for medicine. She completed the postbaccalaureate premedical program at Columbia University, matriculated into medical school at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson in New Jersey, and finished her adult psychiatry residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In residency, she has been part of the inaugural class of our own Clinical Educator Track in the Dept of Psychiatry at Mayo Clinic, through which she has created and implemented a curriculum residents in the General Pediatrics Program on practical approaches to working with the Mental Health Boarders. She is in the process of obtaining her certification for PCIT under the guidance of Dr. Romanowicz. Michelle is a co-chief fellow for the CAP program at Mayo and currently serves as an appointed member of the Women’s Committee for AACAP. Her interests include the intersection of infant and perinatal psychiatry, patient health literacy, and medical school/residency education.

  • Summarize evidence on the impact of length of parental leave and parent-child outcomes.
  • Compare current national, state, and local policies on parental leave as they impact our community.
  • Identify implications of related research and policies, considering possible next steps for action.

Adaptation of the Stricker Learning Span for Spanish Speakers (SLS-S)

Natalia Luna Andrade, MD

Introduction

Natalia Luna Andrade, MD, is a psychiatry resident at Mayo Clinic, currently participating in the outpatient clinic in Eau Claire, Wisconsin as part of the Community Track. She graduated with a degree in Medicine from the Pontifical Catholic University in Quito, Ecuador. During her medical training, she was appointed student representative and helped develop an international collaborative project sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Services, which included a full scholarship to participate in educational activities in Germany and attendance to a student forum in Peru. During her senior year of training, she spent some time as an intern at the University Hospital of Zürich. Natalia completed her mandatory primary health care service in the rural areas in the north of Ecuador before relocating to the United States where she was invited as a guest scholar in the Global Health Program at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson in New Jersey. Before residency, she took part in research at the University of Southern California, first at the Minority Services Research Group and later at the Institute for the Developing Mind.

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe rationale for self-administered cognitive measures for diverse Spanish speakers.
  • Discuss methods and feasibility of a rapid iterative model for virtual community engaged cognitive test development.
  • Illustrate major findings from qualitative data analysis.
