Substance Use in Physicians

Timothy Oja, D.O.

Introduction

Timohty Oja, D.O., is an early career psychiatrist from Michigan. He completed his undergraduate degree at Michan State University. He attended medical school at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 2019. He completed psychiatry residency training at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services in Grand Rapids, MI, where he served as chief resident and graduated in 2023. He is currently completing addiction psychiatry fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. His clinical interests include treating dual diagnosis patients, collaborative care, and neuromodulation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe unique aspects of substance use disorders (SUDs) in physicians, including epidemiology, regulatory considerations, clinical manifestations, assessment, and treatment.
  • Review reporting requirements and how to report concerns about impaired colleagues.

Male Hypogonadism and Depression

Matheus Marques, M.D.

Introduction

Matheus Goncalves Marques, MD, is a 4th-year resident in the Adult Psychiatry Program at Mayo Clinic Rochester and Chief Resident for the current academic year. Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he obtained his medical degree at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), where his interest in medical education and advocacy led him to represent Brazilian students in the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA). As a resident, he has developed a strong interest in Mood Disorders and understanding how new treatment modalities can impact the current management of depression. After completing residency, he will continue his academic career as a Mood fellow at Mayo.               

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define male hypogonadism and associations with depression.
  • Explore current evidence for testosterone replacement antidepressant effects.
  • Discuss screening for male hypogonadism in psychiatric patients.
