ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

 

Dr. Jennifer Wethe, PhD, lead neuropsychologist and Co-director of the Concussion Program at Mayo Clinic Arizona will present Concussion Check, a training program and evidence-based, sideline concussion identification protocol for non-medical personnel. Time permitting, she will provide guidance for facilitating the return-to-learn/work process and cutting edge information on exercise and return to play. She will address common myths and misconceptions regarding concussion recovery and long-term outcomes.

    ABOUT THE SPEAKER

 

Dr. Wethe has more than 15 years of experience in the assessment and rehabilitation of adults and children with acquired brain injury and other neurological conditions. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic in 2013, Dr. Wethe oversaw and coordinated the rehabilitation of patients with acquired brain injury at Hook Rehabilitation’s comprehensive adult outpatient neurorehabilitation program at Community Health Network in Indianapolis, Indiana. Prior to that she was at Barrow Neurological Institute / St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, where she was an Associate Professor of Neuropsychology and Associate Director of the Children’s Center for Neuropsychological Rehabilitation. She was instrumental in the development of the interdisciplinary B.R.A.I.N.S. (concussion) Clinic.

 

Dr. Wethe’s research interests include factors that influence concussion and rehabilitation outcome, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), clinical test validation, and neurobehavioral functioning in patients with hypothalamic hamartoma. Since joining the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Wethe has been the Principle Investigator for the multi-organization Correlates of Youth Athletic Participation study and the Emerging Tools in the Evaluation and Management of Concussion study. She was awarded the Penske Career Development Award for Research at Mayo Clinic Arizona for expanding the Correlates of Youth Athletic Participation study to include comprehensive longitudinal follow-up of concussed athletes and matched controls. She is also co-investigator on a large, longitudinal NIH/NINH grant to study CTE in retired professional athletes and controls.

 

Dr. Wethe completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at Purdue University. She went on to complete Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in clinical psychology, also at Purdue University. She trained as a pre-doctoral fellow at Wishard Health Services-Indiana University Medical Center; completed a neuropsychology internship at University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology and rehabilitation at Barrow Neurological Institute / St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.
