Are you preparing for the National Board Exam? This course is designed specifically for alumni of the Mayo Clinic 12-week course to enhance your coaching skills and best practices from the NBHWC content outline through engaging, group-based learning activities led by board-certified instructors from the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training Program.
Earn up to 4 Mayo Clinic continuing education credits by attending our virtual, live study-group sessions and completing the course survey. To maximize your learning experience, we encourage some self-study in advance of utilizing this course as a helpful supplementary review.

Withdrawal Procedure - The learner must provide written notice of withdrawal. For withdrawals made more than 14 days prior to the start of the course or program, a refund will be made less an administration fee of $75.
For withdrawals made within 14 days of the first day of the course or program or after program begins, no refund will be made.
+ Mentor Coach Package
Current learners and alumni of the Mayo Clinic 12-week course can purchase mentor coaching packages to work one-on-one with a Mayo Clinic and National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach. These packages include three one-hour sessions focused on practical coaching, strategy discussions, and personalized feedback on coaching practices.

Learners maintain access to the course materials and recordings for their 12-week cohort for TWO YEARS following completion of the program.

Guidelines for Becoming a Mayo Clinic Certified Wellness Coach - Initial Certification
Step One: Complete the 12-week Wellness Coach Training Program, which includes online assignments, a five-day virtual intensive, peer-to-peer coaching calls, mentored feedback, and live webinars with a global cohort.
Step Two: Complete 50 hours of coaching within 2 years after finishing the training program. Client interactions should emphasize coaching skills and strategies taught in the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training Program. Students must complete a case study documenting a series of sessions with one individual, highlighting the skills learned through the course. These skills include, but are not limited to, discussing roles, expectations and logistics of meetings and can also include:
- Enhancing motivation for health behavior change
- Assessing strengths, barriers, coping skills
- Establishing a wellness vision
- Applying coaching skills such as curious inquiry, empathy, reflective listening, or experimental goal setting
- Client interaction guidelines are provided within the training course
Refer to your Session 12 course materials on Brightspace for additional specifics on requirements for the practice hours. Brightspace access to course materials is available for two years following completion of the course.
Certification Time Period
Participants who meet the practice hour requirement will be certified for a three-year period beginning on the first day of the month following the completion of all paperwork and grading by Mayo Clinic staff. The initial Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Certification fee is included in your training registration.
Volunteer Clients: Practice hours can include volunteer clients, but not significant others, first-degree relatives, or class peers. All clients must be 18 years or older.
Certification Renewal Requirements
- Certified participants must document 30 hours of continuing education over three years, with at least 15 hours from courses and the rest from client coaching hours.
- Upload your certification documentation on your learner profile on the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training Program Certification Website
- Submissions must include a certificate of completion with credits earned, student name, course title, instructor, and date. Acceptable continuing education includes coursework and workshops in counseling, psychology, coaching, health behavior change, and specialty areas like sleep or nutrition.
- The NBHWC directory of pre-approved continuing education providers is a helpful resource, and participants can opt-in for Mayo Clinic updates on continuing education opportunities. Select the Get Updates tab to review.

NBHWC Board Certification:
The Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training Program is an approved training program by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching. (NBHWC)
As an accredited course, we meet or exceed the NBHWC published standards for health and wellness coach training and education. Graduates from accredited programs qualify to apply for the NBHWC National Board Certification Exam and have the opportunity to earn the designation, National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC).
