Mayo Clinic's Selected Topics in Internal Medicine (STIM) is a postgraduate course designed to update general internists, internist-subspecialists, family medicine specialists, and other primary healthcare professionals on selected internal medicine topics. Some of the most common problems encountered in clinical practice are represented. Course focus is clinical pearls and practice updates. Presentations are made by experts from various disciplines in internal medicine and faculty members are available during breaks to answer questions and to discuss cases with course participants.

This pre-course session provides hospitalists and inpatient clinicians with practical, evidence-based updates on the diagnosis and management of common conditions encountered in hospitalized patients. Through expert-led presentations and case-based discussions, attendees will gain clinically relevant insights, review evolving guidelines, and strengthen their approach to delivering high-quality inpatient care. | Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is most valuable when integrated with the history, physical examination, and other clinical data to answer focused clinical questions. This interactive workshop moves beyond an organ-based approach to ultrasound education by organizing learning around two common patient presentations: dyspnea and the red, swollen leg. Participants will alternate between hands-on scanning and small-group, case-based discussions that emphasize image acquisition, image interpretation, and clinical application. Through interactive cases and faculty-guided discussion, learners will explore how POCUS can refine the differential diagnosis, increase diagnostic confidence, and inform patient management while recognizing the strengths and limitations of bedside ultrasound. |
Target Audience
This course is designed for general internists, internal medicine subspecialists, family medicine physicians, and other primary healthcare professionals.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Summarize recent updates, clinical studies, and new guidelines that impact practice in general medicine
- Describe updated practice and clinical practice strategies
