This symposium will provide an educational opportunity to learn about carbon ion/heavy particle therapy. The course will cover background and practical aspects of operating a carbon ion/heavy particle therapy center, as well as treatment considerations, radiobiology, physics and clinical outcomes for treating with heavy ions. Topics will vary based on the expertise of each speaker, with a highlight on the following: radiobiologic or physics principles of carbon treatment, and clinical outcomes following carbon ion therapy.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe technological considerations and beam characteristics of carbon ion accelerators
- Discuss the physical aspects of clinical carbon ion beams including dosimetry, treatment planning, and treatment delivery
- Describe the biological underpinnings of carbon ion therapy and compare and contrast with photons and protons
- Outline the role of carbon ion therapy in the treatment of a spectrum of malignancies
