This course offers evidence-based strategies for managing medically unexplained conditions. Review of the pathophysiological process of nociplastic pain will be followed by symptom-specific didactic sessions, case vignettes, clinical pearls, Q&A sessions, daily roundtable discussions and group problem-solving exercises. An optional session on practical communication strategies will be offered.

Target Audience

This course is intended for general internists, internal medicine subspecialists, family medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other primary healthcare professionals who practice in or have a special interest in treating medically complex patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain mechanisms
  2. Evaluate postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome
  3. Critique common patient-reported etiologies using current evidence bases to provide empathetic and scientifically accurate counseling
  4. Apply practical nonpharmacologic strategies for management of chronic pain, fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, and brain fog
  5. Identify treatment strategies for fibromyalgia and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome
