NEPHROGENETICS Update 2026: Integrating Genetics into Clinical Practice
This course offers Live (in-person) and Livestream (virtual) attendance options

Course Directors: Fouad T. Chebib, M.D. and Silvia M. Titan, M.D., Ph.D.
Genetics is rapidly transforming clinical practice in nephrology with innovations in diagnosis, prognostication, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets. There is an urgent need to train the nephrology workforce and offer periodic learning opportunities in the constant evolving landscape of genetics, thereby capacitating providers to promote refined diagnosis and personalized medicine in clinical practice. This course aims to provide the audience with an in-depth review of current knowledge on genetics of monogenic and complex renal diseases.

Target Audience
This course is designed for nephrologists, nephrology fellows, and other clinicians involved in the care of patients with kidney disease. It is also highly relevant for clinical geneticists, genetic counselors, and transplant specialists seeking to integrate genomic insights into practice. Advanced practice providers, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants in nephrology, will benefit from the practical, case-based approach. Pathologists and laboratory medicine professionals involved in genetic testing and interpretation are also encouraged to attend. The content is best suited for learners with an intermediate to advanced understanding of nephrology and an interest in precision medicine.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify clinical indications and patient populations in nephrology for which genotyping is appropriate and clinically impactful.
- Assess the role of genotyping in refining diagnosis and prognostication in inherited and monogenic kidney diseases, including polycystic kidney disease (PKD), autosomal dominant tubulointerstitial kidney disease (ADTKD), COL4-related kidney diseases, Fabry disease, monogenic nephrotic syndrome, nephrolithiasis, and complement-mediated kidney disorders.
- Apply genotyping results to guide therapeutic decision-making and individualized treatment strategies in patients with genetic kidney diseases.
- Compare commercially available genetic testing modalities used in nephrology with respect to test methodology, diagnostic yield, limitations, and appropriate clinical use.
- Determine when additional genetic analyses or functional testing are indicated following initial genotyping.
- Integrate genetic testing principles into clinical practice through analysis of case-based scenarios involving patients with suspected or confirmed genetic kidney disease.
Attendance at any Mayo Clinic course does not indicate or guarantee competence or proficiency in the skills, knowledge or performance of any care or procedure(s) which may be discussed or taught in this course.
