Course Description

The symposium focus is Transforming Perceptions in Healthcare through the Humanities in order to:  
       • Showcase innovative and unique arts in healthcare programs
       • Explore vital themes, emerging research and innovation in the field 

Presented in three tracks - the PRACTICE, RESEARCH, and EDUCATION of arts and humanities in healthcare - each examined through the lenses of DIVERSITY and INCLUSION that support our culturally diverse communities of patients, providers and caregivers. The symposium is designed to engage artists and healthcare providers who have an interest in building or expanding arts in health care.

Presenters must be registered attendees at the Symposium.
Limited scholarships for artists and students may be available.

Target Audience

This course is intended for attendees from across the spectrum of arts in healthcare -- including arts and health practitioners, expressive art therapists, physicians, nurses, social workers, healthcare providers, artists, arts directors, arts institutions, veterans services, health and human service agencies, researchers, administrators, educators, students, family and professional caregivers -- will experience and contribute to dialogue, best practice and innovation that serve the field.

The abstract submission deadline has been extended to Monday, August 24, 2015.

As part of this course, you are invited to submit an abstract to showcase innovative and unique arts in healthcare programs, and to explore vital themes, emerging research and innovation in the field. 

Conference Registration Requirement: Paid conference registration is required for accepted abstracts.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Integrate aspects of artistic creativity into the healing sciences.
• Identify therapeutic benefits of the creative arts.
• Adopt humane and artistic resiliency strategies for self-care.
• Demonstrate tools to facilitate teaching of humanities in the health care curriculum.
• Appraise written and dramatic arts for therapeutic benefits.
• Foster the humanistic elements of humanities in medicine.
• Interpret studies on the benefits of humanities.
• Apply dramatic and movement arts in therapeutic venues.
• Connect the physical and metaphysical aspects of healing; vis-à-vis, yoga, mindfulness, guided imagery etc.
• Enjoy a wealth of educational opportunities in a nurturing setting. 
• Gain insight into one’s own personal and professional cultural standpoint and regard for cultural others through the practice of reflection. 
• Nurture and develop awareness of how assumptions and biases about people with disabilities influence the doctor-patient relationship
