This course is an advanced level "Teach the Teachers" course designed for orthopedic surgeons with a special interest in upper extremity trauma, elbow surgery and trauma surgery. The course has technical skills orientation, with the didactic portions limited to the necessary introductions and theoretical knowledge required for the technical components. Live surgical broadcasts used during lecture sessions demonstrate not only surgical techniques pertaining to this year's topic of the unstable elbow, but also anatomy examples of elbow conditions and injuries that cause instability.
Target Audience
This live course is open to physicians, residents, fellows, physician assistants and physical therapists interested in advanced elbow surgery.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Diagnose elbow instability
- Classify elbow instability and fracture-dislocations
- Assess and treat acute elbow dislocations and fracture-dislocations according to a logical algorithm
- Predict which elbows will remain unstable and treat them
- Recognize and apply the indications for surgery in acute dislocations and fracture-dislocations
- Apply the principles and technique for reconstructing the coronoid in unstable elbows
- Employ multi-ligament reconstruction for instability of the elbow
