Integrated Behavioral Health in Primary Care: Approaches that Work 2018
Primary care providers are on the front line of identifying and treating mental health problems. The primary care setting is often viewed by patients as a more acceptable and accessible mental healthcare home than specialty psychiatry and psychotherapy settings. Large-scale research trials demonstrate the effectiveness of collaborative care of mental health disorders in the primary care setting. Yet, primary care providers and systems are stretched. In this course we will review the art and science of team-based integrated behavioral health services in the primary care setting.
Course format involves engaging lectures, rich with case examples within the context of existing and emerging science. Break-out seminars will be interactive and emphasize collaborative learning. Content ranges from managing electronic systems and data, to managing team conflict and burnout. Attendees will have opportunities to share their own integrated behavioral health experiences and challenges. Mayo Clinic faculty will share insights and practical applications of lessons learned after years of systematic IBH efforts. Faculty and attendees will include the many disciplines involved in primary care IBH, including psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, and primary care. Expert trainers in the Collaborative Care Model, as part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative (TCPI), will provide a workshop emphasizing the key elements of the model (team-driven, population-focused, measurement-guided, and evidence-based) with emphasis on tools and resources for practice redesign. This course is designed for the many disciplines and providers involved in primary care IBH, including psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, primary care, and pediatrics. The content is relevant to physicians, advanced practice providers, desk staff, and schedulers.
- Identify key features of integrated behavioral health (IBH) care models in the primary care setting.
- Describe the needs of special populations (e.g., elderly, rural, disadvantaged, child and adolescent) within an IBH model.
- Name one of the measures used to monitor patients within an IBH model.
- Identify an IBH strategy or action step that has practical application for your own clinic.
