This 5 day intensive course will  provide training on TB Case Management and TB Contact Investigation Skills.  The combined curriculum is designed for nurses and public health staff who provide care for patients with tuberculosis. It will familiarize them with the basics of TB Diagnosis, Treatment of Latent TB Infection and Treatment of TB Disease as well as familiarize them with the role of public health nurses  in TB Case Management.  The TB Contact Investigation Interviewing Skills curriculum is designed as an interactive, skill-building training to improve the abilities of both new and experienced staff who are responsible for conducting TB contact investigation interviews. The course provides an overview of the contact investigation process, basic communication and interviewing skills, and opportunities to apply those skills in role play activities.  The audience is public health nurses and physicians from the US Affiliated Pacific Islands and Hawaii. 

Jointly provided by Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development and Mayo Continuing Nursing Education.

This course is planned in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Curry International Tuberculosis Center, Heartland National TB Center, Mayo Clinic Center for Tuberculosis, Rutgers Global Tuberculosis Institute, and Southeastern National Tuberculosis Center.

Target Audience

This course is designed for Public Health & Infectious Disease MDs, RNs, Pharm.D., Public Health Professionals,TB Controllers and Laboratory Technologists in the US Affiliated Pacific Islands and Hawaii.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Apply latest advances for assessing risk, testing and treating latent TB infection to prevent development of disease
  • Utilize current recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment and management of tuberculosis disease
  • Describe how to coordinate care for patients with TB and diabetes to ensure effective management
  • Develop approaches for addressing challenges in the management of patients with tuberculosis to achieve successful outcomes
  • Describe strategies for improving TB prevention and control efforts
  • Outline principles of TB infection control and best practices for collaborating with key partners
  • Describe the purpose of a TB contact investigation
  • Identify core concepts and skills that are required to conduct a TB contact investigation
  • Implement fundamentals concepts for conducting TB contact investigations to assess potential TB exposure and prevent ongoing transmission in the community
  • Describe the systematic approach to conducting a TB contact investigation
