Medical Errors - EM

NOTE: At this time, this course is only open to Mayo Clinic Employees.  

This course satisfies the Florida Board of Medicines requirement for 2 credits in Medical Errors for each biennial renewal.  As stated by the Florida Board of Medicine, this course relates to the prevention of medical errors which includes: a study of root cause analysis, error reduction and prevention, and patient safety. The course includes information relating to the five most misdiagnosed conditions during the previous biennium, as determined by the Board. While wrong site/wrong procedure surgery continues to be the most common basis for quality of care violations, the following areas have been determined as the five most misdiagnosed conditions: cancer related issues; neurological related issues; cardiac related issues; timely responding to complications during surgery and post-operatively; urological related issues.

Physicians seeking to renew their Florida Medical license.  

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course learners will:

  • Identify the five most misdiagnosed conditions during the previous biennium, as determined by the Florida Board of Medicine

  • Explain the role that documentation plays in the “Inpatient Mortality Index”
  • Explain how early discussions about palliative care can influence hospital mortality, the utilization of healthcare resources, and patient quality of life at the end of life
