The 7th Annual Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Summit will be a hybrid course offering live lectures as well as a simultaneous livestream. We will cover all aspects of the upper extremity including the hand/wrist, elbow, and shoulder. We will review physical exam techniques, appropriate imaging modalities, rehabilitation strategies, and when surgery is indicated. Additionally, we will provide an update regarding the use of biologics for common upper extremity injuries. We will discuss all aspects of the care of the overhead/throwing athlete while also providing live ultrasound demonstrations. Faculty representing orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, plastic surgery, athletic training, and physical therapy will lead didactic and interactive case presentations and panel discussions.

Target Audience

This course is designed for athletic trainers, physical therapists and primary care physicians. Orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists, and other health care professionals interested in sports medicine may benefit from this program.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review treatment options for Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder). (BOC Domain 2; Task 203 and Domain 4; Task 0403)
  • Identify the best use of ultrasound/CT/MRI for respective upper extremity injuries. (BOC Domain 2; Task 0202)
  • Select the best treatment options for partially torn ulnar collateral ligaments (UCL) injuries. (BOC Domain 4; Task 0403)
  • Summarize the most current literature regarding the use of ortho-biologics in the use of UCL and rotator cuff injuries. (BOC Domain 2; Tasks 0202)
  • Review the latest literature on return-to-throw protocols. (BOC Domain 2; Task 0202)
  • Review the utilization of ultrasound, including sideline use, for acute hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder injuries. (BOC Domain 2; Task 0202)
  • Summarize the best practice of utilizing pitch-count limits in the young athlete to avoid injury. (BOC Domain 1; Task 0102 and Domain 2; Task 0203)
