Mayo Clinic's 8th Annual Sports Medicine for the Clinician 2024 CME conference in Orlando, Florida offers attendees the confidence to accurately diagnose and treat sports-related conditions, as well as injuries sustained during recreational physical activities. This CME conference covers appropriate testing and referral criteria, as well as what is on the horizon for diagnosis and treatment. The conference also helps to improve the specific skills in physical exam and imaging interpretation that assist in the diagnosis of conditions that may have implications for participation, performance and recovery in sports and recreational physical activities

Target Audience

This course is designed for athletic trainers, physical therapists, NPs, PAs, sports medicine physicians, family physicians, physiatrists, internists, pediatricians, ER physicians, orthopedists, and medical providers involved in the care and management of athletes and active individuals in clinic or non-operative/non-surgical/non-invasive settings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the criteria that necessitates orthopedic surgery for next level of care in common sports injuries.
  • Identify the contributions of the various ancillary disciplines in terms of supporting athletes recovering from surgical procedures and advanced ultrasound-guided interventions.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms that will lead to respiratory conditions requiring special attention due to sports implications.
  • Illustrate the various nerve entrapment syndromes that have effects on the limb function of athletes and that cause pain that may be debilitating or performance-altering.
  • Explain the transition from post-operative conditions to return to play for athletes and active individuals, specifying differences and possible adaptations for different sports.
  • Show the uses of non-surgical, needle-based procedures, including the principles underlying their effectiveness and outcomes given different musculoskeletal conditions and injuries.
