Rochester, MN US
September 30, 2023

Course Directors: Timucin Taner, M.D., PH.D. and Sudhir S. Kushwaha, M.D.

September 30, 2023 - Mayo Clinic - Rochester, Minnesota

Highly sensitized multiorgan transplant candidates are challenging for transplant providers. Currently, there is no consensus on assessment of these patients’ immunological risk, waitlist management or post-transplant immunosuppression. Growing evidence suggests liver allografts provide immunological protection to the simultaneously transplanted organs through different mechanisms. This course will review the most current clinical and experimental data, and identify areas for further research and allocation policies that will help transplant this difficult cohort of patients.

Target Audience

This course is designed for organ transplant physicians and care providers.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss current practices of management of highly-sensitized multiorgan transplant candidates.
  • Review the clinical outcomes of highly-sensitized patients receiving multiorgan transplants.
  • Summarize recent findings on the underlying mechanisms of the liver allografts’ immunoprotective role.
  • Identify future directions for research and clinical care.
