The Mayo Clinic Division of Community Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care is pleased to offer this program to provide family practitioners, internists, general practitioners, advanced nurse practitioners and physician assistants with current information on the care of older adults, including clinical evaluation of cognitive and functional health, chronic disease management strategies, topics on post acute/long term care, and caregiver support.

This broadly applicable CME conference enhances attendee knowledge and skills in caring for older adults by providing:

  • The latest, evidence-based approaches to common geriatric syndromes, including dementia, delirium, polypharmacy, pressure injuries, osteoporosis/hip fracture, frailty, and weight loss/malnutrition
  • Expert insight on chronic disease management and common conundrums in older adults, including sessions covering: health maintenance in older adults, antibiotic and psychotropic stewardship in long-term care, heart failure in older adults, management of Parkinson’s disease, balancing bleeding and clotting risks in older adults on anticoagulation, and much more
  • Practical tips for managing elderly patients across the healthcare continuum (ambulatory, inpatient, homebound, post-acute and long-term care)

Optional ABFM KSA Module: Care of Older Adults

This activity will focus on diagnosis and management of common and uncommon medical conditions that occur in older adults. Topics also include disease prevention, rehabilitation, geriatric psychiatry, and health policy and systems issues as they relate to older adults.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe an approach to evaluating new cognitive impairment in an older adult patient
  • Describe opportunities to prevent and treat delirium focusing on non-pharmacologic measures
  • Identify ways to judiciously use anticoagulation in older adults, balancing risks of bleeding and clotting
  • Manage Parkinson’s Disease expertly using only one medication
  • Develop a practical approach to management of malnutrition and weight loss in older adults
