Effective Communication in Healthcare and Cross Cultural Workshops 2020

FOR MAYO CLINIC EMPLOYEES ONLY

This communication workshop consists of one half day of Communication in Healthcare and one half day of Cross Cultural Communication. The course work includes didactic education given by faculty trained in communication skills as well as small group teaching sessions where the learners have an opportunity to practice their communication skills with trained standardized patients. These skills demonstrated are then critiqued by faculty as well as the other learners.

If Attending in Florida, you must complete both half-day sessions of the workshop before claiming credit. Then, please claim credit by registering for the date that you've attended your second session. 
 

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

Communication in Healthcare~

  • Articulate the importance of effective communication in patient-centered healthcare.
  • Demonstrate effective listening, using active listening techniques.
  • Elicit and negotiate an agenda using “What else?”
  • Apply relationship-building skills using “PEARLS.”
  • Convey a meaningful diagnosis using “Ask-tell-ask.”
  • Give bad, sad or unexpected news using “SPIKES.”

Cross-Cultural Communication~

  • Describe the concept of cultural humility
  • Explain how cross cultural communication impacts health disparities
  • Increase self-awareness and understanding of biases and assumptions.
  • Demonstrate skills that are useful for eliciting a patient’s or family’s health and healing beliefs.
  • Identify skills to work effectively with healthcare interpreters.

ABIM
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 7 Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Participation information will be shared with ABIM through PARS.

ABP
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity, with individual assessments of the participant and feedback to the participant, enables the participant to earn 7 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. This activity is designated for a maximum of 7 MOCA® credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program®, MOCA®, MOCA 2.0®, and MOCA Minute® are registered certification marks of the American Board of Anesthesiology®.

This course, consisting of 2 tests with 42 questions total, is qualified by the American Board of Radiology in meeting the criteria for self-assessment toward the purpose of fulfilling requirements in the ABR Maintenance of Certification Program for a maximum of 8 SAM credit hours.

ABS
This activity provides Category I CME and a maximum of 7 Self-assessment credits toward Part 2 of the ABS MOC Program.

ABPath

How to Participate:
Select the date you attended.  Note: If you attended in Florida, select the date of the module you attended last.

If you wish to obtain MOC, participate in the session that has MOC in the title.  Learners will participate in a quiz consisting of 42 questions.  Learners have 2 attempts and must pass at a mimimum of 80%.  CME is awarded in conjunction with the MOC, although those who don't need MOC should participate in the CME session option.

If you need to claim CME (but not MOC), or just want to document attendance, select the module that has CME in the title.  Learners will not be asked to participate in the quiz, and will need to claim the number of hours they participated.
