Mayo Clinic’s Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Symposium is dedicated to the latest advancements in head and neck cancer care, encompassing surgical oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, and symptom control/survivorship. 

Target Audience

This course is intended for otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, laboratory scientists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, oncology pharmacists, oncology nurses, speech and language pathologists, physical therapists, dietitians, dentists, clinical research personnel, and other allied health staff involved in the care of head and neck cancer patients. Specialties include medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, ENT, pathology, radiology, and laboratory research science.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate the evidence for perioperative immunotherapy in resectable locally advanced HNSCC, including patient selection based on PD-L1 status and multidisciplinary implementation strategies.
  • Appraise the clinical utility and limitations of circulating tumor HPV DNA for treatment response assessment, minimal residual disease detection, and recurrence surveillance.
  • Analyze current radiation dose-fractionation guidelines and emerging de-escalation strategies for oropharyngeal, oral cavity, and laryngeal cancers.
  • Evaluate the role of novel systemic therapies beyond checkpoint inhibitors in the management of recurrent/metastatic HNSCC and nasopharyngeal carcinoma to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Describe evidence-based strategies for prevention and management of radiation-associated dental toxicity, osteoradionecrosis, and other late effects of head and neck cancer treatment.
  • Develop comprehensive survivorship care plans addressing chronic pain, voice/swallowing rehabilitation, neck fibrosis, lymphedema, and nutritional optimization in head and neck cancer patients.
